Principal Electrical Engineer - Protection & Controls Engineer

Oracle Oracle · Enterprise · United States

This role focuses on establishing and maintaining the protection and controls technical baseline for large-scale data centers, including on-site generation, HV substations, energy storage systems, and MV/LV distribution. Responsibilities include defining protection philosophy and standards, ensuring consistent implementation, and providing technical approval of protection designs, settings, and commissioning validation. The role also supports reliable microgrid operation and leads protection-related event response.

What you'd actually do

  1. Own the protection and controls technical baseline for large-scale data centers, including on-site generation, HV substations, energy storage systems, and MV/LV distribution.
  2. Define the protection philosophy and standards, ensure consistent implementation across projects, and provide technical approval of protection designs, settings, and commissioning validation.
  3. Support reliable microgrid operation across grid-connected, islanded, and black start modes, and lead protection-related event response through root cause and corrective actions.
  4. Establish and maintain protection and controls standards
  5. Define the protection and controls philosophy, including scheme selection, coordination principles, operating assumptions, and expected system behavior under normal and abnormal conditions

  • Demonstrated experience protecting on-site generation (rotating and inverter-based) and supporting microgrid operating modes, including grid-connected and islanded operation and transitions
  • Experience developing and reviewing relay settings, protection logic, and commissioning test plans
  • Familiarity with IEEE standards and utility interconnection practices
  • NERC exposure as applicable to site context
