Northrop Grumman is seeking a Principal Engineer Tool/ Sr. Principal Tool Engineer- Tool Design Engineer to design tooling, drill jigs, assembly jigs, and dies using Catia/NX to support their production tooling assembly line. The role involves conceptualizing designs, detailing CAD models and drawings, performing tolerance analysis, conducting root cause failure investigations, and mentoring less experienced engineers. The position requires a strong understanding of manufacturing methods, CAD tools, and engineering drawings, with a focus on ensuring manufacturability and meeting customer needs.

What you'd actually do

  1. Execution/Lead/Coordination of design and fabrication requirements for tools and fixtures with customers, both internal and external.
  2. Performing tolerance analysis to ensure form/fit/function.
  3. Conduct root cause failure investigations and implement associated corrective actions.
  4. Lead and Assist Product Development Team with new product designs to ensure manufacturability, validate process/technology.
  5. Core Competencies - Manufacturing Methods - Knowledge of manufacturing, methods, fabrication processes (e.g., forming, stamping, machining, heat treatment, machines/machine tools, cutting tools and fluids, N/C programming, instrumentation, data acquisition and control systems). Ability to select the best method of producing parts, tools or assemblies.

Skills

Required

  • Bachelor's Degree with 5 years of experience OR a Master’s Degree with 3 years of experience OR a PhD Degree with 1 years of experience in production assembly/fabrication (aerospace preferred)
  • Ability to understand/read/apply GD&T to a blueprint.
  • Ability to communicate with various levels of leadership
  • Ability to work well with little to no supervision.
  • Ability to obtain and retain DOD clearance and program access in a reasonable time frame.

Nice to have

  • Bachelor's STEM Degree OR Master's STEM Degree
  • Professional Engineer License
  • 5 years of experience in Catia or NX
  • 5 years of experience using ASME Y 14.5 in a design role.
  • 5 years of experience in Tool Design
  • Ability to understand and interpret program/project business needs
