Principal Experience Designer

Seeking a Principal Experience Designer to create and deliver high-quality experiences for Autodesk Building Design Products. This role involves user research, workflow analysis, strategic enhancement proposals, solution design, prototyping, and collaboration with product management, engineering, and other stakeholders. The designer will also facilitate usability tests and deliver design communication artifacts. Requires strong interaction design, research, and communication skills, with experience in modern software development processes.

What you'd actually do

  1. Conducts user research to gather requirements. This includes interviews, ethnographic observation, workflow analyses and contextual inquiry. Creates personas based on research
  2. Transfers understanding of user needs and workflows to propose strategic enhancements to company products. Working with Product Management, distills this into a set of features that will benefit the user in the most effective way
  3. Designs alternative solutions, evaluating them to choose the best approach. Visualizes and prototypes intended solutions. Meets and collaborates with users and development partners to validate conceptual designs
  4. Assists in the coordination and facilitation of usability tests and other target user research with project partners to validate existing and future feature design (including prototype testing ranging from low-fidelity to high-fidelity)
  5. Delivers design communication artifacts for use by a wide range of audiences including Software Development, Test Development, Technical Publications, Sales and Marketing. Reviews feature implementation, test plans and documentation to ensure accuracy of desired application results

  • 8+ years of professional interaction design and usability evaluation/research experience
  • Demonstrable understanding of modern software development processes
  • A solid understanding of both quantitative and qualitative research methods
  • Ability to develop interactive prototypes and documentation to aid evaluation and development of designs
  • Strong communications skills: written, verbal and visual
  • Fluent English language skills
  • Fast learning
  • Ability to solve complex problems and drive projects from concept through implementation
  • Able to influence decision-making at all levels
  • Prior experience with Figma, Adobe Creative Cloud, Sketch or similar

The Senior Experience Designer will work on global initiatives and collaborate with stakeholders from the product team, engineering team, and other functional teams across different geolocations around the world. This role requires an empathetic mindset, strategic thinking, critical research and analysis skills, proven data-driven design experience, and a thoughtful approach to working independently, collaboratively, and globally within a large organization. You will report to the Experience Design Manager at Autodesk China R&D Center (ACRD) and be a part of the global experience design team. This position is based in Shanghai, China.

  • Facilitates presentations and discussions with users, developers, and product marketers to drive resolution on proposed features and functionality

  • Partners with development team to drive successful implementation of product design specifications. Resolves any implementation issues that affect the design

  • Maintains familiarity with other company products and competitive products to ensure compatibility with proposed feature sets

  • Collaborates with members of the product team(s) in the production of white papers, demonstration examples, and other technical collateral required for product introductions and ongoing marketing

Minimum Qualifications

  • 8+ years of professional interaction design and usability evaluation/research experience with multi-disciplinary design teams

  • Demonstrable understanding of modern software development processes as they relate to design

  • A solid understanding of both quantitative and qualitative research methods

  • Ability to develop interactive prototypes and documentation to aid evaluation and development of designs

  • Strong communications skills: written, verbal and visual

  • Fluent English language skills
