Principal Heat Transfer Engineer

Caterpillar Caterpillar · Industrial · San Diego, CA

Principal Heat Transfer Engineer role at Caterpillar (Solar Turbines) focused on the design, analysis, and experimental validation of turbine cooling systems. Responsibilities include managing engine thermal management, developing advanced cooling techniques, creating FEA models, leading qualification tests, and mentoring junior engineers. Requires expertise in turbomachinery heat transfer, secondary flow systems, and specific FEA/CFD tools.

What you'd actually do

  1. Provide preliminary details of definition, analysis and experimental validation of turbine cooling systems.
  2. Work with design and analysis of secondary flow circuits, turbine disks, turbine diaphragms, and cooled airfoils.
  3. Manage engine thermal management and transient thermal analysis including seal and rotor tip behavior, development of advanced cooling techniques, and design methods.
  4. Design and analyze existing and new uprated turbine cooling systems.
  5. Create advanced finite element analysis predictive models of gas turbine equipment.
