Northrop Grumman is seeking an experienced Principal Materials & Processes (M&P) Engineer or Sr. Principal Materials & Processes (M&P) Engineer specializing in metallic structures for their Vehicle Engineering organization in Melbourne, Florida. The role involves performing root cause analysis of material failures, generating test plans and reports, analyzing, researching, designing, and developing materials and their related fabrication and application processes. Responsibilities include applying principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic processing specifications and fabrication/assembly processes, as well as analyzing material properties and design allowables. The position requires a STEM degree with significant experience in metallic materials for airframe structures, experience with metals and their aerospace applications, and experience with repair processes for metallic materials. A DoD Secret clearance and Special Access Program (SAP) clearance are mandatory.

What you'd actually do

  1. Performs root cause analysis of material failures, provides effective solutions to production composite issues
  2. Generates test plans & reports
  3. Analyzes, researches, designs and develops materials and their related fabrication and application processes to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of and/or application in structures, systems and subsystems. Applies principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic processing specifications, fabrication and assembly processes. Develops, analyzes and applies material properties and design allowables, processing processes and quality engineering specifications. Material analyses may include failure analysis of components, systems and subsystems, life predictions, and definition and requirement specifications.
  4. May review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures
  5. May travel to subcontractor locations

Skills

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline
  • minimum of 5 years of experience to include a background in metallic materials for airframe structures OR Master's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline with a minimum of 3 years of experience to include a background in metallic materials for airframe structures
  • Experience with metals and their applications related to the fabrication and design on aircraft
  • Experience with repair processes for metallic materials used in aerospace structures
  • DoD Secret Clearance
  • Special Access Program (SAP) clearance

Nice to have

  • BS or MS in Materials Science or similar
