Principal Quantum Engineer

Microsoft Microsoft · Big Tech · Santa Barbara, CA +1 · Quantum Engineering

Microsoft Quantum is seeking a Principal Quantum Engineer to design next-generation QPUs (quantum processing units) for scalable quantum computing based on topological qubits. This role involves cross-disciplinary co-design with fabrication, systems, and control teams, serving as a technical authority, and optimizing design workflows. The role also requires leveraging AI tools to accelerate engineering and lab workflows, including designing AI agents/copilots for various tasks.

What you'd actually do

  1. CrossDisciplinary CoDesign: Partner closely with fabrication, systems, packaging, and control teams to codesign QPUs, incorporating systemlevel constraints, process limitations, and scalability requirements.
  2. Technical Authority & Partner Interface: Serve as a technical interface and design authority for engagements with design, fabrication, and packaging partners.
  3. Process & Workflow Optimization: Apply integratedcircuit design principles and engineering best practices to continuously improve design workflows, decisionmaking rigor, and execution efficiency.
  4. Foundry CoDevelopment: Codevelop process assumptions, design rules, PDK extensions, and qualification strategies in close collaboration with fabrication partners.
