Product Counsel Lead

Product Counsel Lead to support Product, Engineering, and Marketing on legal issues related to Autonomy and AI, including privacy, data protection, accessibility, and emerging technologies. Will also manage patenting program, advise on IP strategy, build compliance systems, and review contracts.

What you'd actually do

  1. Be a trusted advisor to the Product, Engineering, Design, and Business Teams and help them navigate a range of issues related to Autonomy and AI, including privacy, data protection, accessibility, and consumer protections
  2. Lead and support cross-functional projects related to compliance, safety, and IP protection, ensuring all legal requirements are integrated into product development workflows
  3. Review product integrations to ensure compliance with contractual obligations, data protection laws, intellectual property rights, and other relevant legal and regulatory requirements
  4. Translate legal advice into actionable guidance for cutting-edge product and engineering teams, often under tight deadlines
  5. Manage our patenting program, facilitate invention harvesting sessions, and advise on IP strategy

Skills

Required

  • Experience working with internal engineering, product, design, security, privacy, and marketing teams throughout the product development life cycle, advising on regulatory requirements and how to mitigate risks for new technologies
  • Experience counseling business partners on domestic and international laws, regulations, and best practices for implementing and ensuring ongoing compliance
  • Demeanor to thrive in a fast-paced, execution-focused environment, requiring exceptional organizational skills, juggling priorities, and adhering to strict deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to advance large, complex projects
  • 8+ years' of law firm and/or in-house experience, preferably in technology companies, with the activities described above
  • J.D. degree from an accredited law school and active membership in one state bar

Nice to have

  • Experience with some combination of law firm and in-house work
  • Computer science or engineering degree
  • Familiarity with machine learning, autonomy, generative models, and products
  • Privacy certifications (CIPP-E, CIPP-US, CIPM), or desire to obtain one
