Product Safety Engineer at Apple, Bengaluru, responsible for ensuring Apple products meet international safety standards and regulations. This role involves supporting safety engineering design, testing, and continuous improvement strategies, with expertise in applying, interpreting, and developing product safety standards for product commercialization. The engineer will conduct safety compliance testing, report writing, acquire certifications, and drive product design for safety and compliance to global standards (IEC/EN/UL/CSA). Responsibilities include conducting design of experiments, failure analyses, owning safety aspects of products, negotiating design processes, understanding manufacturing processes for safety issues, and working with suppliers. Requires a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering or related field with 10+ years of experience in consumer product design, safety, risk, and failure analysis, proficiency in evaluating product safety and compliance to specific standards, and experience with FMEA and fault trees.

What you'd actually do

  1. Exercise a deep understanding of Apple products and work with cross-functional teams to identify and address related safety requirements and resolve design challenges for new technologies and consumer products.
  2. Conduct Safety compliance testing, report writing, and acquire certifications, not limited to CB or related schemes.
  3. Drive product design for safety and compliance to global standards as promulgated by IEC/EN/UL/CSA, along with related test equipment, test procedures, and agency requirements
  4. Using scientific methods, conduct design of experiments and failure analyses for purposes of evaluating product performance and safe operation.
  5. Own and drive the safety aspects of Apple products, and negotiate corresponding design processes and reviews at the system and module levels.

Skills

Required

  • Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 10+ years of engineering experience in consumer, medical, military, space product design, or reliability engineering
  • Deep knowledge of electronics design, safety, risk and failure analysis
  • Evaluating product safety, product safety testing, and compliance to at least two standards from the following list: IEC/EN/UL/CSA 60950, 62368, 62133, 60601 and 60065
  • Engineering fundamentals, Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA), and fault trees
  • Professional fluency in English
  • Interpret, evaluate, test, and write reports to product safety standards
  • Present verbally and in writing complex technical topics to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to foster and maintain close working partnerships with vendor safety departments, contractors, and third-party agencies

Nice to have

  • Master’s degree Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Material Science, or Mechatronics
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience with EN 352, ISO4869, ANSI S12.6
  • System Safety & design background with hands-on experience in safety certifications of complex products and performing risk analysis to eliminate safety risks
  • Solid understanding on test equipment, test procedures, and agency requirements from the above Safety Standards.
  • Interpret and negotiate requirements, apply knowledge to new situations, and implement new solutions with customer safety as the priority.
  • Professional fluency in Indian local dialects, not limited to Hindi, Kannada, or Tamil.
  • Ability to build and deliver presentations for executives with crisp data.
  • Confident to work independently and act as a good team member.
  • Existing familiarity with Apple products, programs, and/or processes
