Prototype Tool and Die Machinist

This role is for a Prototype Tool and Die Machinist at Boeing, responsible for planning, setting up, and operating machine tools to create high-precision tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures. It involves working with complex designs, various materials, and detailed blueprints, requiring strong skills in shop mathematics, geometry, and trigonometry. The position also requires experience with CNC mills, lathes, and programming G and M codes, with a preference for EDM wire and conventional machining experience. A security clearance is required.

What you'd actually do

  1. Responsible for an assigned major experimental, developmental or other project which requires the planning, lay-out, set-up and operation of all types of machine tools to perform laboratory machining operations requiring the highest level of skill and job knowledge to precise tolerances Plan, construct, modify, repair and maintain complete high precision and costly tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures of extremely complicated and unusual design.
  2. Design, develop, and fabricate holding fixtures and electrodes for Electrical Discharge Machines, and operate to produce components to precise tolerances.
  3. Work from verbal and written instructions, engineering drawings, part-prints, sketches, blueprints, and rough sketches where normal operating assignment involves a general outline of an experimental or developmental project in which the full complement of machine tools must be utilized in order to carry assignment to completion.
  4. Plan sequence of operations and methods to completely layout and set up work for the entire project, including temporary tooling and production aids where a thorough knowledge of finishes and machining characteristics of newer types of plastics, metals, and laboratory machine shop theory is utilized.
  5. Layout complex parts for the project and make necessary complex calculations requiring extensive use of shop mathematics.

Skills

Required

  • Machinist Apprenticeship program graduate and/or completed a Machining Certificate
  • Minimum 10 years of experience setting-up and operating CNC Mills and Lathes
  • Minimum 5 years of experience programming G and M codes
  • Ability to obtain a US Security Clearance
