Release Engineer, Consumer Devices

OpenAI OpenAI · AI Frontier · San Francisco, CA · Consumer Products

This role focuses on building and maintaining the systems for software delivery, including CI/CD pipelines, artifact management, release automation, and fleet telemetry. The goal is to ensure software across various components (bootloaders, firmware, OS, cloud) is built reproducibly, validated rigorously, and released safely at scale, with a focus on consumer devices and embedded products.

What you'd actually do

  1. Design and operate CI/CD pipelines for multi-component builds (bootloader, firmware, OS images, backend, companion apps) using hermetic toolchains.
  2. Define versioning and branching strategies; automate promotions, changelogs, and artifact retention.
  3. Integrate unit, integration, and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test results; quarantine flaky tests, auto-bisect failures, and block unsafe promotions.
  4. Build A/B OTA update flows with verity and health checks; run staged rollouts and canaries; implement safe rollback and roll-forward strategies.
  5. Implement code signing for binaries and firmware, generate SBOMs, run vulnerability scanning, and attach build attestations and provenance.
