Northrop Grumman UK is seeking a Safety Engineer to assure the safety of complex, mission-critical systems for the UK's naval capability. The role involves contributing to the design, development, and support of Platform Management Systems, working within multi-disciplinary engineering teams to embed safety throughout the system lifecycle. Responsibilities include supporting safety engineering activities, hazard identification, safety analysis (HAZOP, FFA, FTA, FMECA, LOPA), generating safety requirements, producing safety documentation, and supporting design reviews.

What you'd actually do

  1. Supporting the delivery of safety engineering activities across complex defence programmes
  2. Contributing to hazard identification and safety analysis, including HAZOP, FFA, FTA, FMECA and LOPA
  3. Assisting in the generation of system safety requirements and safety targets
  4. Producing high‑quality safety documentation in line with company and customer standards
  5. Supporting design reviews and safety committees, providing clear and evidence‑based safety arguments

Skills

Required

  • Education or experience in a safety-related engineering environment
  • Awareness of functional and product safety standards such as IEC 61508 and Def Stan 00‑056
  • Understanding of hardware and software failure modes and their effects
  • Exposure to safety and reliability analysis techniques such as hazard analysis, FMECA or FTA
  • Ability to work effectively within multi‑disciplinary engineering teams
  • A degree, HND or HNC in Engineering or a safety‑related discipline, or equivalent experience
