Marqeta is seeking a Senior Cloud Database Engineer to manage and automate AWS Aurora instances, analyze database performance, and build next-generation database solutions for their card issuing platform. The role involves contributing to technical vision, designing high availability and disaster recovery solutions, and focusing on automation for relational and non-relational databases.

What you'd actually do

  1. Be part of a 24x7 on-call rotation supporting all services the Database Engineering teams owns
  2. Contribute to the technical vision for database engineering in maintenance and Cloud migration of the relational and non-relational databases used at Marqeta.
  3. Contribute to the design of high availability and disaster recovery solutions for database architecture
  4. Work on initiatives including but not limited to platform architecture, database partitioning, sharding, and the continuous evolution of the database footprint to support business growth.
  5. Keep automation as the primary focus and ensure the design is tightly coupled with various automation to reduce manual work

Skills

Required

  • 5+ years experience as a backend engineer
  • Experienced with cloud native databases (AWS preferred)
  • Experienced in cloud based high availability, disaster recovery, and distributed systems
  • Experienced in IaC, automation and orchestration tools (Terraform, AWS Step Function, etc.)
  • Experienced CI/CD
  • Solid understanding of database administration: internals, query tuning, indexing, and performance metrics.
  • Proficient in Python
  • Experience with Linux commands and shell scripting
  • Experienced in monitoring and observability tools: Datadog preferred
  • Strong sense of ownership
  • Curious and committed to continuous learning
  • Team-oriented approach

Nice to have

  • Logical/physical migrations + blue-green switchovers
  • Database fleet management.
  • AI tooling fluency
  • Basics in Java
  • Experience with payments or the FinTech space
  • Experience with ProxySQL and/or RDS Proxy
