Senior Composites Engineer (Methods and Allowables) at Joby Aviation, focused on developing and validating structural analysis methods and standards for aircraft components. Requires expertise in composite materials, structural analysis, and testing for FAA certification.

What you'd actually do

  1. Develop and validate structural analysis methods and standards
  2. Create tools for efficient, accurate analysis of composite and metallic structures
  3. Create and execute test plans to validate analysis tools and generate statistical design values for use in structural sizing
  4. Coordinate and collaborate with other team members to ensure that assigned projects meet technical, budgetary, and scheduling requirements
  5. Communicate project plans, status updatea, and results to internal stakeholders

Skills

Required

  • B.S. in mechanical, aerospace, or structural engineering
  • 8+ years of industry experience related to the development and certification of composite structures for small aircraft
  • Experience performing analysis (stress, stability) of composite structures for aerospace or other high-performance applications using finite element analysis and hand calculations
  • Solid understanding of composite materials, characterization testing, including test matrix definition, data evaluation, and basis property calculation
  • Excellent understanding of the mechanics of composite materials (Classical Lamination Theory, elastic and strength properties, failure modes)
  • Proficiency with programming or scripting languages (C++, Python, VBA, etc.)
  • Ability to create well-written and accurate technical documents such as analysis templates, test plans, test reports, and certification documents

Nice to have

  • M.S. in mechanical, aerospace, or structural engineering
  • 10+ years of experience related to the development and certification of composite structures for small aircraft
  • In-depth knowledge of the certification process for composite aircraft structures (AC 20-107B)
  • Experience in the design and analysis of bonded and bolted joints
  • Experience performing structural testing and test-analysis correlation of composite or metallic structures
  • Working knowledge of composites design and manufacturing
