Senior Economist - Advertising Technology

Expedia Expedia · Hospitality · Seattle, WA

Expedia is seeking a Senior Applied Economist for their Advertising Technology team. The role focuses on auction design, ad relevance, incrementality measurement, and marketplace optimization, leveraging economic theory, applied statistics, econometric modeling, and experimentation within large-scale ad systems. The economist will collaborate with Data Science, ML, Engineering, and Product teams to translate analysis into scalable marketplace improvements, influencing ad ranking, pricing, and evaluation. Responsibilities include analyzing ad auction mechanisms, defining ad relevance signals, designing and analyzing experiments, building econometric and causal models, and communicating insights. Requires a Master's or PhD in a quantitative field, strong knowledge of microeconomic theory, game theory, applied statistics, econometrics, Python/R, SQL, causal inference, and hypothesis testing. Familiarity with AI-driven systems and strong communication skills are also required. Preferred qualifications include experience in advertising, auctions, ranking, marketplace platforms, incrementality measurement, and integrating generative AI tools.

What you'd actually do

  1. Analyze and improve ad auction mechanisms (pricing, bidding, pacing) and model advertiser behavior to balance revenue, ROI, relevance, and user experience
  2. Define and evaluate ad relevance signals using statistical and econometric methods to ensure incentive-aligned metrics
  3. Design and analyze incrementality and causal experiments (geo tests, holdouts, switchbacks) to measure true lift and avoid cannibalization
  4. Build and validate econometric and causal models to understand marketplace dynamics, pricing, and long-term health
  5. Conduct advanced data analysis to inform product strategy, policy decisions, and marketplace optimization
