Upstart is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager for their ASPL team, which focuses on auto-secured lending products. The role involves leading a team to increase eligibility, improve conversion, and build new product capabilities. Responsibilities include setting execution priorities, developing engineers, partnering with cross-functional stakeholders, and using data to drive improvements. The company heavily utilizes AI and advanced AI in its lending marketplace.

What you'd actually do

  1. Lead and develop a team of engineers working across borrower-facing flows, backend services, and platform capabilities that increase eligibility and reduce friction.
  2. Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to define roadmaps, shape requirements, and deliver solutions that balance growth, customer experience, and risk.
  3. Drive execution on cross-functional initiatives that expand access to auto-secured lending and enable new product capabilities.
  4. Improve the speed, quality, and reliability of delivery by setting clear priorities, raising engineering standards, and building healthy execution mechanisms.
  5. Use data to identify funnel bottlenecks, evaluate tradeoffs, and guide investments that improve conversion, automation, and operational efficiency.
  6. Coach engineers and technical leaders, grow team capability over time, and build an inclusive team culture grounded in ownership and continuous improvement.

Skills

Required

  • 8+ years of experience building and operating production software systems, including distributed systems or cloud-based applications.
  • 3+ years of experience managing software engineers.
  • Experience leading cross-functional engineering initiatives from planning through production launch.
  • Experience working on customer-facing products with measurable business outcomes.
  • Experience partnering with product, design, and non-engineering stakeholders to deliver solutions in a fast-moving environment.

Nice to have

  • Experience delivering products in fintech or another regulated industry.
  • Ability to use metrics and experimentation to identify opportunities and make product and engineering tradeoffs.
  • Experience leading teams through periods of rapid product or organizational growth.
  • Experience supporting both new product development and ongoing platform or systems improvements.
