Senior Hardware Engineer, Orbital Infrastructure

Armada Armada · Enterprise · Bellevue, Sunset Corporate · R&D - Edge Hardware

This role is for a Senior Hardware Engineer focused on the physical design and component strategy of orbital compute nodes for AI infrastructure. The engineer will select silicon, design custom PCBs, and modify terrestrial data center hardware for space environments, ensuring signal integrity and thermal management. Responsibilities include component strategy, custom server design, manufacturer collaboration, thermal/mechanical integration, hardware hardening, and validation/qualification.

What you'd actually do

  1. Lead the selection of CPUs, GPUs, and high-density NVMe storage. Evaluate silicon based on performance-per-watt and inherent radiation susceptibility (TID/SEE).
  2. Architect custom server sleds and high-speed backplanes. Ensure signal integrity for PCIe Gen 5/6 and CXL links in a compact form factor optimized for a satellite bus.
  3. Act as the primary technical point of contact for Tier 1 component vendors. Work with their engineering teams to deep-dive into firmware and hardware-level modifications for orbital stability.
  4. Design conduction-based cooling solutions and the use of Phase Change Materials (PCM) or advanced heat pipes for heat dissipation in the absence of air.
  5. Lead the "Space-Adaptation" of terrestrial hardware, implementing shielding, structural reinforcements, and conductive cooling paths.
  6. Oversee the hardware testing lifecycle, from initial breadboarding to Thermal Vacuum (TVAC) and Vibration (Shock/Vibe) qualification.
