Senior Lab Operations Manager, Deepmind

Google Google · Big Tech · Mountain View, CA +1

This role is for a Senior Lab Operations Manager at Google DeepMind, focused on optimizing lab productivity, safety, and workflow for AI research experiments. The manager will align internal engineering goals with external vendor execution, track KPIs like Lab Uptime and MTTR, and instill Lean methodologies. While the role supports AI research, it is not directly involved in building or developing AI models or systems.

What you'd actually do

  1. Own the daily rhythm of the lab with an eye on increasing research velocity. Manage space allocation, equipment scheduling, and workflow optimization to ensure no engineer or technician is ever "blocked."
  2. Be the metric-owner for "Floor Productivity." Track and optimize Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as Lab Uptime, Station Utilization, and Mean Time to Repair (MTTR).
  3. Take the "wild west" of a Research and Development lab and instill rigorous 5S and Lean methodologies. Ensure that whether a tech is working on various partner robots or a Humanoid prototype, the environment and tools are consistent.
  4. Take feedback back and forth from operations to other teams to develop clear next steps for the team.
  5. Build the culture of "safety-first" high performance. Make sure agreed safety protocols are implemented.
