What you'd actually do

  1. Direct the state and local income/franchise tax compliance process, including reviewing work papers and returns prepared by internal staff and external providers.
  2. Assist with the quarterly and annual state income tax provision process according to ASC 740. This includes state current and deferred taxes, valuation allowance review, and evaluation of uncertain tax positions.
  3. Ensure documentation, disclosures, and controls are provided; deliver audit-ready outputs promptly.
  4. Develop and apply state income tax planning strategies (nexus, apportionment, credits/incentives, structure, intercompany) to optimize effective tax rate and cash taxes.
  5. Stay informed on legislative and administrative developments; assess impacts and communicate risks/opportunities to leadership with clear recommendations.

Skills

Required

  • Bachelor's degree or relevant experience in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 10+ overall years of experience including more than 8 years of progressive experience in state income tax within a corporate tax department and/or public accounting (multistate environment)
  • 2+ years of leadership experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in supporting ASC 740 income tax accounting, with a strong grasp of state current/deferred tax and associated documentation
  • Comprehensive technical knowledge of nexus, apportionment, state modifications, credits/incentives, and controversy assistance
  • Proven capability to lead all aspects of projects from start to finish, coordinate external providers, and communicate clearly with senior colleagues
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities and a high standard for quality

  • Proven expertise with complex multistate tax challenges (combined/unitary, separate versus combined reporting, allocation/apportionment, and sourcing related to digital/product revenue streams)
  • Hands-on management of state provision workflows, including provision controls/SOX, audit facilitation, and establishing repeatable documentation
  • Demonstrated ability to transform large data sets into tax-ready formats (e.g., data mapping, reconciliations, and employing automation to reduce manual effort)
  • Experience in state audits, settlements, and controversy resolution, including preparing position memos and collaborating with external advisors
  • Experience in transaction support (M&A diligence, legal entity rationalization, integrations, and post-deal planning) from the viewpoint of state income tax
