Senior Process Engineer - Quantum

Microsoft Microsoft · Big Tech · Lyngby, Denmark · Quantum Engineering

Seeking a Senior Process Engineer with UHV experience and a background in superconductor/semiconductor materials for quantum computing system fabrication. The role involves running and owning manufacturing processes, driving development, and implementing mature processes into the Plan of Record (POR) flow. Responsibilities include fabricating quantum devices, monitoring and controlling fabrication process flows, yield tracking, data analysis, and root cause analysis for device quality and fabrication processes. The role also requires troubleshooting operational issues and participating in UHV tool maintenance. While not core to the role, the candidate should be able to leverage AI tools for innovation and efficiency in an AI-first environment.

What you'd actually do

  1. Fabricate quantum devices using UHV‑based nanofabrication and deposition processes.
  2. Drive process development and transition of mature processes into the POR.
  3. Monitor, control, and maintain fabrication process flows, with a focus on improving process quality and control. This includes yield tracking, data analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  4. Support root cause analysis or failure mode investigations related to device quality and fabrication processes.
  5. Troubleshoot operational issues and participate in planning and execution of UHV tool maintenance.

Skills

Required

  • MSc with relevant experience or PhD in Materials Science, Engineering, or Physics.
  • Significant hands-on experience with UHV‑based nanofabrication and process development of superconducting and/or semiconductor materials.
  • Experience with superconductor and/or semiconductor materials characterization techniques used to assess structural, interfacial, and electrical performance relevant to process quality and device behavior.
  • Demonstrated experience as process owner for UHV deposition tools, including maintenance planning, tool qualifications, and change control.
  • Self-motivated, with a strong sense of ownership and the ability to deliver results in a highly challenging environment.
  • Ability to generate insight from data and apply data-driven decision-making.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, with strong teamwork capabilities.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements.

Nice to have

  • Ability to leverage AI tools to drive innovation and efficiency (e.g., performance modeling and analysis, research gathering, day to day task automation).
  • Ability to work in an “AI-first” environment using modern AI tools to accelerate discovery through hardware development.
