Senior Quantum Materials Uhv Hardware Engineer

Microsoft Microsoft · Big Tech · West Lafayette, IN +1 · Quantum Engineering

Seeking a Quantum Materials UHV Hardware Engineer to design, build, and operate UHV deposition and processing systems for Microsoft Quantum's scalable quantum computing platform. This role involves advanced nanoscale characterization, establishing feedback loops between materials and device performance, leading experimental campaigns at national labs, and developing data acquisition and analysis pipelines.

What you'd actually do

  1. Advanced Nanoscale Characterization: Define and execute advanced characterization experiments using: Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS), Atom probe tomography (APT), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM)
  2. Extract atomic-scale and electronic structure information relevant to: Interface quality and disorder, Composition, defects, and dopant distribution, Electronic states and superconducting properties
  3. Materials–Device Feedback & Insight Generation: Establish and own the structure → properties → device feedback loop, linking nanoscale measurements to qubit-relevant metrics
  4. National Lab Collaboration & Experiment Leadership: Lead experimental campaigns at U.S. national laboratories and user facilities (e.g., DOE labs, shared instrumentation centers)
  5. Technical Leadership & Cross-Functional Impact: Provide characterization-driven technical direction across materials, fabrication, and device teams
  6. Tooling, Data & AI-Enabled Analysis: Develop and scale pipelines for high-throughput data acquisition, analysis, and correlation
