Senior Software Engineer, Data Platform

Skydio · Defense · San Mateo, CA +1 · R&D

Skydio is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for their Data Platform team. This role involves building and scaling systems to collect, transform, and store data from autonomous drones. The engineer will define data architecture, work with Databricks and Palantir Foundry, and implement AI-assisted analytics. The position focuses on data infrastructure for autonomy, AI, and large-scale telemetry, aiming to turn flight data into actionable intelligence. Responsibilities include designing data infrastructure, evolving Databricks/Foundry environments, developing data systems for predictive analytics and mapping, creating AI-powered data tools, championing data best practices, collaborating with other teams, and ensuring platform reliability through monitoring and observability. The role also involves leading and mentoring data engineers and analysts.

What you'd actually do

  1. Design and scale the data infrastructure that ingests live telemetry from tens of thousands of autonomous drones — reliably, efficiently, and with the scale to support the next generation of flight intelligence.
  2. Build and evolve our Databricks and Palantir Foundry environments to empower every Skydian to query data, define jobs, and build dashboards — turning raw telemetry into accessible, actionable insights.
  3. Develop data systems that make our products truly data-driven — from predictive analytics that anticipate hardware failures, to 3D connectivity mapping, to in-depth flight telemetry analysis that sharpens drone performance.
  4. Create and integrate AI-powered tools for data analysis, transformation, and pipeline generation — lowering the technical barrier and democratizing how teams access and build with data.
  5. Champion a data-driven culture by defining and enforcing best practices for data quality, lineage, and governance, keeping Skydio’s data lakehouse secure, performant, and cost-effective at scale.
