Senior Software Engineer, Operator Tooling

Handshake · Enterprise · San Francisco, CA · Engineering

This role is for a Senior Software Engineer on the Operator Tooling team at Handshake. The primary focus is on building internal products and automation to enhance operational efficiency and speed. The role requires deep collaboration with operators to understand their workflows and translate needs into technical requirements. Success depends on strong technical fundamentals, high EQ, and the ability to deliver iterative improvements in ambiguous environments. While the company has an AI division, this specific role is centered on internal tooling and operations, not direct AI/ML model development.

What you'd actually do

  1. Embed with operators to understand processes, pain points, and success metrics; translate them into clear technical requirements and deliverables.
  2. Architect and build internal tools, automations, and workflows that improve operational throughput, accuracy, and visibility.
  3. Lead projects end-to-end: discovery, scoping, technical design, implementation, rollout, and iteration.
  4. Balance speed and quality by making thoughtful tradeoffs, ensuring maintainability, and building with operational reliability in mind.
  5. Collaborate closely with cross-functional partners (operators, engineering, product) to drive adoption and measurable impact.
