This role is for a Senior Tax Associate focused on indirect tax compliance, specifically sales and use tax, for Capital One. Responsibilities include preparing tax returns, journal entries, researching technical tax issues, and responding to audits. The role involves partnering with procurement, accounting, finance, and legal departments to manage tax risk and ensure compliance. The ideal candidate has strong technical knowledge of state and local sales and use tax laws, analytical and problem-solving skills, and good communication abilities.

What you'd actually do

  1. Prepare indirect tax returns for Capital One, including calculating tax in each jurisdiction
  2. Prepare monthly journal entries to record sales, use and other local tax accruals, taxes paid and use tax expense
  3. Work closely with business units, finance and procurement functions to coordinate data collection, and ensure timely and accurate tax reporting
  4. Partner with the Tax Controversy team to respond to questions from tax auditors
  5. Prepare responses to indirect tax notices

Skills

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree or military experience
  • At least 2 years of tax experience in a public company or accounting firm or law firm or a combination

Nice to have

  • Masters of Science (MS) in Tax or Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • 3+ years of indirect tax experience
  • Direct experience with sales & use tax reporting and payment engines (e.g., Avalara, Vertex, TR One Source)
  • Experience with invoicing and accounts receivable systems for indirect tax collection
  • Experience researching sales and use tax laws and advising companies on the impacts of those laws and regulations
  • Direct experience with the testing and implementation of a sales and use tax reporting and payment engine
  • Experience with Alteryx or other data automation products
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite or Google Suite
