Northrop Grumman is seeking a Sr. Staff Systems Safety Engineer to support the Sentinel program. The role involves influencing design for safety expectations, analyzing and recommending design features to control hazards, participating in product design, creating functional specifications and safety requirements, developing safety documents, and evaluating the interrelationship of safety requirements with other design aspects. The candidate will have expertise in MIL-STD-882E, DO178, DO254, software development, and generating design artifacts for system safety analyses. Requires a Bachelor's degree in STEM, active DoD Secret Clearance, and experience with C/C++, Java, and MIL-STD-882E hazard analysis.

What you'd actually do

  1. The System Safety Engineer is to influence design for meeting safety expectations and requirements for our Northrop Grumman Products
  2. The successful candidate will independently analyze and recommend design features that meet safety criteria in system design to control or eliminate hazards
  3. The role includes active participation in the design of products/systems, associated support equipment and facilities
  4. The role includes the creation of functional specifications and establishes safety requirements for assigned systems
  5. The tasks includes developing safety documents, as required, to support customer and test/operational range requirements and performing audits of operational areas and reporting on the effectiveness of system safety program

Skills

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline
  • 14 years of experience with Bachelor's degree, 12 years of experience with Master's degree, 10 years of experience with PhD
  • US Citizen with an active DoD Secret Clearance
  • C/C++, Java, object-oriented design or similar software development experience
  • Using MIL-STD-882E to conduct Preliminary, Functional, Subsystem, System, Operating and Support Hazard Analysis
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills of the English language

Nice to have

  • Lead a team in software safety processes in Engineering and Manufacturing Development Phase
  • Using DO-178 or DO-254 for design development
  • Developing in an Agile environment
  • Model Based Systems Engineering experience
  • Developing missile flight systems software
  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP) / Certified Safety Professional (CSP) Certificate
