Sr Engineer - Reliability Engineering & Enablement

Target Target · Retail · NCD-0375 Brooklyn Park, MN

This role is for a Senior Engineer on the Reliability Engineering & Enablement (REE) team, focusing on building and operating the platform, integrations, and data capabilities behind ServiceNow at Target. The team aims to improve reliability, enable enterprise data access, and modernize the platform into a scalable, event-driven, and AI-enabled ecosystem. The engineer will design, build, and operate backend services, APIs, and integrations, own systems end-to-end, and contribute to platform modernization efforts. While the role mentions AI-enabled ecosystems and AI-assisted development, the core responsibilities are in backend engineering, system reliability, and platform modernization, not direct AI/ML model development.

What you'd actually do

  1. Design, build, and operate scalable backend services, APIs, and integrations
  2. Own systems end-to-end, including design, implementation, deployment, and production support
  3. Translate ambiguous platform and reliability requirements into clear technical solutions
  4. Improve system reliability through observability, incident response, and proactive system improvements
  5. Design and implement integration patterns (APIs, event-driven systems, data workflows)

Skills

Required

  • 4-year degree or equivalent experience
  • 3–5+ years of software development experience
  • Strong proficiency in backend development (Golang, JavaScript, or similar)
  • Experience designing and building APIs and distributed systems
  • Ability to translate ambiguous requirements into technical designs and deliver solutions independently
  • Experience owning systems in production, including troubleshooting and reliability improvements
  • Strong understanding of system design tradeoffs (performance, scalability, maintainability)
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, with ability to influence technical decisions

Nice to have

  • Experience with event-driven architectures or distributed systems
  • Experience with cloud platforms and data systems (e.g., GCP, databases, pipelines)
  • Familiarity with observability practices (SLOs, metrics, logging, tracing)
  • Experience modernizing legacy systems or integration-heavy platforms
  • Exposure to AI/automation workflows (e.g., MCP, agentic systems)
  • Experience with ServiceNow or enterprise platform integrations
