This role focuses on the selection, application, and specification of non-metallic materials, including coatings, adhesives, sealants, and composites, for aerospace applications. It involves evaluating materials for flight environments, developing risk mitigation strategies, assessing obsolescence, and supporting production operations. The engineer will also develop test plans for material qualification and aging studies, and provide technical support for manufacturing and subcontractors. A strong understanding of material science and relevant military standards is required, along with the ability to obtain a Secret clearance.

What you'd actually do

  1. Work with design engineers in selection and application of non-metallic materials systems, this includes environmental coatings, adhesives, sealants, composite materials, and supporting hardware.
  2. Create Material, Process, Component Specifications or Source Control Documents to meet Program Requirements
  3. Review and analyze materials, components, and processes selected for use in new designs against program specific PM&P requirements to determine suitability
  4. Evaluate and/or develop risk mitigation strategies to manage non-compliant/prohibited PM&P usage in new designs
  5. Assess risks associated with part/material obsolescence and lead the identification and selection of alternate and/or substitute parts/materials when necessary.

Skills

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline
  • 9 years of experience with Bachelor's degree, 7 years of experience with Master's degree, or 4 years of experience with PhD
  • US Citizen
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret Security Clearance
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) clearance

Nice to have

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Chemistry, or applicable STEM discipline
  • Familiar with the Arrhenius methodology and the simulation of accelerated aging
  • Working knowledge of MIL-STD-11991 and application to missile programs
  • Working knowledge of MIL-STD-1568 for corrosion prevention of Aerospace Weapons Systems
  • Working knowledge of MIL-STD-7179 Finishes, Coatings, and Sealants for the Protection of Aerospace Weapons Systems
  • Working knowledge of Failure Analysis, Root Cause & Corrective Action, component specifications, component screening & qualification, component application qualification, and related installation/assembly process specifications for space, air vehicle, ground support applications
  • Experience as a responsible test engineer, managing planning and execution of one or multiple test campaigns
  • Experience in the review and approval of subcontractor specifications, drawings, test plans and procedures
  • Active DOD Secret or Top-Secret clearance
