Joby Aviation is seeking a Sr. / Staff Supplier Industrialization Engineer specializing in Metals and Mechanical Systems. This role involves ensuring suppliers can meet rigorous aerospace standards for quality, scale, and performance by optimizing production lines and driving industrialization of components. Responsibilities include leading industrialization, conducting process deep-dives, managing continuous materials, developing suppliers, collaborating cross-functionally, managing quality, and reviewing tooling/equipment. Requires 8+ years of experience in industrial/manufacturing/supplier quality engineering in high-stakes industries, with deep technical expertise in metals manufacturing and GD&T.

What you'd actually do

  1. Lead the industrialization phase for complex metallic components and mechanical systems.
  2. Conduct technical deep-dives into supplier processes, including CNC machining, casting, forging, heat treatment, extrusion, and specialized coating/finishing lines.
  3. Manage and audit suppliers of continuous materials (e.g., aerospace-grade alloys, sheet metal, and wire), ensuring consistency in material properties and traceability.
  4. Develop, manage, and audit supplier manufacturing and assembly techniques.
  5. Facilitate technical alignment between Joby’s Design, Quality, and Manufacturing teams and the supplier's engineering staff.

Skills

Required

  • B.S. in Mechanical, Metallurgical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent evidence of exceptional ability)
  • 8+ years of experience in industrial, manufacturing, or supplier quality engineering
  • Deep understanding of metals manufacturing: machining, casting, forging, and secondary processes (anodizing, plating, etc.)
  • Experience with continuous material forms (extrusions, rolled products)
  • Expertise in GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing)
  • Expertise in advanced inspection methodologies (CMM, NDT)
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex projects and influence external partners
  • Ability to travel up to 50% (domestic and international) to partner sites

Nice to have

  • Experience with PPAP/APQP processes in an aerospace (AS9100) or automotive (IATF 16949) environment
  • Familiarity with aerospace-grade aluminum, titanium, and specialized steel alloys
  • Experience with mechanical system integration (actuators, linkages, or propulsion housings)
  • Six Sigma Green/Black Belt or Lean Manufacturing certification
