Staff AI Scientist role focused on researching, designing, and deploying multimodal AI models for precision medicine and therapeutic solutions in healthcare, leveraging large clinical and molecular datasets. The role involves technical leadership, algorithmic innovation, collaboration with life sciences companies, ensuring regulatory alignment, and scientific contribution through publications. Requires a Ph.D., 5+ years of industry experience in end-to-end ML model development, and expertise in deep learning, computer vision, and multimodal modeling.

What you'd actually do

  1. Architect and lead the development of AI-intensive projects from initial research to production-ready design.
  2. Design and train state-of-the-art models utilizing multi-modal data, including but not limited to pathology slides (WSI), genomic profiles (DNA/RNA), spatial omics, and longitudinal patient records.
  3. Develop sophisticated AI solutions to support biomarker discovery, therapy outcome prediction, and the advancement of Companion Diagnostics (CDx).
  4. Ensure all AI products meet stringent regulatory guidelines and quality standards for healthcare applications.
  5. Maintain Tempus’s position as a thought leader by publishing original research in high-impact venues and engaging with the global AI research community.

Skills

Required

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, or a related quantitative field
  • 5+ years of industry experience leading end-to-end development of machine learning models, from research and experimentation to validation and production deployment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in large-scale deep learning
  • Proficiency in Python
  • Proficiency in the modern deep learning stack (e.g. Pytorch)
  • Strong product-level coding skills for model development
  • Solid understanding of industry-standard software engineering and development practices

Nice to have

  • Experience in computer vision
  • Experience in multimodal modeling (pathology, multi-omics, etc.)
  • Prior work in medical or healthcare AI
  • A strong track record of peer-reviewed publications in leading machine learning or computer vision venues
