Staff Backend Engineer - Digital Credentials

Okta Okta · Enterprise · Toronto, ON · Okta Digital Credentials-620

Staff Backend Engineer on the Okta Digital Credentials team, defining the technical direction of a new Verifiable Digital Credentials (VDCs) identity ecosystem. This role involves setting standards for AI-native engineering practices, mentoring senior engineers, and driving architectural decisions for a greenfield platform focused on secure digital identity in an AI-driven world.

What you'd actually do

  1. Proactively shape the technical strategy and architecture of a greenfield VDC identity ecosystem, partnering with principal engineers to ensure decisions prioritize open standards and interoperability.
  2. Own architectural decisions in a fast-moving environment - balancing rapid delivery with long-term scalability, security, and platform integrity. Identify and mitigate technical risks before they become blockers; escalate dependencies early and widely.
  3. Own production health for your systems - incident response, root cause identification, and driving operational improvement projects (monitoring coverage, alert reduction, runbook quality).
  4. Champion high engineering standards across the team, including rigorous code reviews, comprehensive unit/functional testing, and architectural review processes to ensure the platform is tamper-proof.
  5. Drive continual evolution in the adoption of AI-native development practices, helping the team rethink how we design, review, and ship software with AI as a core part of the workflow.
