Northrop Grumman is seeking a Staff Tooling Design Engineer to design industrial machinery, equipment, tools, dies, gauges, jigs, fixtures, and machine attachments for production or experimental use. The role involves creating 3D models and 2D drawings, ensuring designs are safe and effective for manufacturing, testing, qualifying, and transporting products. Responsibilities include conducting design reviews, collaborating with internal customers and other engineering functions, and managing budgets and schedules for design tasks. The position requires a Bachelor's degree in STEM with significant experience in mechanical, design, tooling, or manufacturing engineering, proficiency in CAD software like NX and CADAM, and experience with GD&T and root cause analysis. A Secret clearance is required.

What you'd actually do

  1. Create 3D models and 2D drawings to be used in the manufacturing of new tooling in support of various programs.
  2. Create effective and safe designs that are used to manufacture, test, qualify, and transport product.
  3. Schedule and run 30/60/90% Design Reviews to ensure customer satisfaction throughout the design cycle.
  4. Work with internal Customers to conceptualize and design support equipment for new and existing programs.
  5. Work closely with other Tool Engineering functions to provide designs on time and within budget.

Skills

Required

  • Bachelors in STEM with 12 years of experience in Mechanical, Design, Tooling, Manufacturing, Die, Product, Mechanical or similar OR Masters in STEM with 10 years of experience OR PhD In STEM field with 9 years of experience
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Clearance and Special Program Access
  • Design, fabrication and implementation of tooling for composite and metallic parts
  • General metallic fabrication including welding and machining
  • Solid modeling experience (NX Preferred)
  • 2D drafting software experience (CADAM Preferred)
  • Manufacturing processes
  • Written and oral communication skills
  • 2D drawing preparation and 2D drawing analysis
  • GD&T practice and implementation
  • Root cause corrective action analysis
  • Leading larger scale projects with minimal to no supervision

Nice to have

  • Extensive knowledge of the E-2D platform
  • Firm comprehension of 2D designed vehicle engineering data
  • Familiarity with OSHA specs for design for safety
