Shield AI Shield AI · Defense · Dallas, TX · Production

Shield AI is seeking an experienced CNC Programmer / Machinist to develop autonomous aerospace systems. This role involves programming, setting up, and operating CNC machines for prototype parts, collaborating with engineers on DFM, and troubleshooting machining challenges. The position also includes mentoring junior machinists and contributing to process development in a fast-paced R&D environment.

What you'd actually do

  1. Program, set up, and operate 3-, 4-, and 5-axis CNC machines for prototype and short-run parts
  2. Develop and optimize CAM programs and G-code for speed, flexibility, and precision
  3. Interpret CAD models, drawings, and GD&T to determine optimal machining strategies
  4. Collaborate directly with design engineers to provide DFM (Design for Manufacturability) feedback
  5. Execute rapid iteration cycles, including same-day or next-day part turnaround when required

Skills

Required

  • 7–10+ years of CNC machining experience, including advanced programming and setup
  • Proven expertise in multi-axis machining (3-, 4-, and 5-axis)
  • Advanced proficiency with CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, Fusion 360, or equivalent)
  • Strong ability to read and interpret complex blueprints and GD&T
  • Demonstrated experience machining tight-tolerance, high-precision parts
  • Deep understanding of cutting tools, feeds/speeds, and material behavior (e.g., aluminum, steel, titanium)
  • Ability to create, edit, and optimize G-code programs
  • Extensive experience with setup, fixturing, and workholding design
  • Proven troubleshooting skills for machining issues, tool wear, and process inefficiencies
  • Experience with quality inspection tools (micrometers, calipers, etc.)
  • Strong knowledge of safety standards and manufacturing best practices
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage multiple priorities

Nice to have

  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • Experience in aerospace, defense, or medical device manufacturing (high-mix, tight-tolerance environments)
  • Familiarity with 5-axis simultaneous machining and advanced toolpath strategies
  • Experience with CAD modeling (SolidWorks, NX, etc.)
  • Knowledge of fixture and tooling design, including custom workholding solutions
  • Experience with post-processor editing or customization
  • Exposure to automation systems (robotics, pallet pools, lights-out machining)
  • Understanding of lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement methodologies
  • Experience using ERP/MES systems (e.g., Palantir, JobBOSS, MaintainX )
  • Familiarity with AS9100, ISO 9001, or other quality management systems
  • Ability to collaborate in DFM activies, mentor junior team members, or provide technical guidance
  • Strong documentation skills for setup sheets, work instructions, and process standardization
  • Experience in machining exotic or difficult-to-machine materials (e.g., Inconel, titanium alloys, composites)
