Staff Mass Properties Analyst at Northrop Grumman, responsible for mass properties functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, and mass properties requirements allocation studies. Analyzes, researches, and tests system hardware for optimal mass properties solutions using tools like solid modeling and database applications. Supports mass properties management and control programs, estimates and optimizes mass properties, establishes target weights, maintains accounting and reporting systems, and provides data for cost and design analyses. Evaluates subcontractor proposals, reviews drawings, measures/weighs components, and provides data for operational flight manuals. Requires a BS in STEM with 12 years of experience or MS with 10 years, an active Secret clearance, and experience with mass property and weight and balance analysis.

What you'd actually do

  1. Supporting the implementation of a Mass Properties Management and Control Program
  2. Accurate estimating and optimizing of mass properties to achieve vehicle performance and fulfill weight-based program metrics
  3. Establishing specification and design target weights
  4. Support the maintenance of the Mass Properties accounting and reporting systems to inform the customer and management of current and projected mass properties trends
  5. Providing mass properties data for cost analyses and vehicle design and analysis

Skills

Required

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) discipline and 12 years of relevant engineering experience; OR Master of Science (MS) in a STEM discipline and 10 years of relevant experience
  • active In-Scope DoD Secret clearance
  • ability to obtain and maintain Active In-Scope DoD Top Secret clearance
  • experience with mass property and weight and balance analysis
  • familiar with Society of Allied Weight Engineers RP 7 & 81aq

Nice to have

  • Aircraft Weight and Balance Certification
  • Automated Weight and Balance System (AWBS) experience
  • Experience in vehicle design and manufacturing techniques
  • Siemens NX or CATIA proficiency
  • Familiarity with electrical harness weight estimation and calculation
  • Familiarity with a Common Product Lifecycle Management system such as SmarTeam or Teamcenter
  • Be able to be the lead mass properties engineer on a given program
  • Inertia calculations and materials properties experience
  • Create Estimated, Calculated, Actual and Status reports
  • Be a lead mass properties engineer on a flight test team
