Staff Product Designer, Benefits

Gusto Gusto · Fintech · San Francisco, CA · Design

Staff Product Designer for the Benefits team at Gusto, focusing on designing and launching a new AI-native product offering. The role involves leading discovery, designing end-to-end service experiences, creating AI-assisted decision moments, defining systems for AI safety and scalability, making data operational for AI collaboration, and building feedback loops to improve AI quality. The designer will also use AI-assisted dev tools for prototyping and delivery.

What you'd actually do

  1. Lead 0→1 discovery and design for a new Benefits product offering—from problem framing to MVP definition—grounded in real employer + employee workflows.
  2. Design end-to-end service experiences across employer, employee, and internal ops workflows—identifying where AI can reduce complexity while keeping decisions clear and controllable.
  3. Design AI-assisted decision moments that help customers choose and act with confidence.
  4. Design the system that makes AI safe and scalable: define objects, rules, states, and exception paths plus guardrails for when AI should defer to humans.
  5. Make data legible and operational: shape the information model and UX so humans and AI can collaborate—clean inputs, clear outputs, and structured handoffs that reduce errors and rework.
