Staff Product Designer

Tailscale Tailscale · Enterprise · Remote · Design

Staff Product Designer for Tailscale, focusing on network features. This role involves defining design strategy, leading discovery for complex and ambiguous problems, translating technical systems into clear problem frames, and delivering end-to-end design solutions for B2B/infrastructure products. The designer will partner closely with engineering and PMs, influence product direction, and raise the bar for design craft. A key aspect is integrating AI tools into the design workflow and exploring their application in technically complex products.

What you'd actually do

  1. Define where design attention is needed across the network features product space and lead discovery on complex, ambiguous problems that often span multiple features or product areas.
  2. Translate abstract technical systems into clear problem frames, using diagramming, system mapping, and design artifacts to build shared understanding and drive alignment across engineering, product, and other stakeholders,
  3. Deliver design solutions end-to-end as needed, whether that means changes to a GUI, a CLI experience, or both, working closely with engineers through implementation and QA.
  4. Explore forward-looking design questions in spaces that do not yet have clear owners or established answers.
  5. Partner closely with engineering and PM counterparts to move from ambiguous problem statements to clear, well-reasoned solutions.
