This role focuses on developing and implementing next-generation automated processes for cosmetic and protective finishes (PVD coatings, Ink Printing) in high-volume manufacturing. It involves both physical automation (robotics, PLCs) and digital automation, including machine vision and deploying ML/AI models for predictive maintenance, defect detection, and process optimization. The role requires integrating automation parameters with materials chemistry and collaborating with cross-functional teams.

What you'd actually do

  1. Leverage massive data sets to train and deploy machine learning/AI models that predict equipment maintenance, detect defects, and optimize process yield.
  2. Implement comprehensive data logging, traceability requirements, and machine vision systems.
  3. Drive automation activities for key coating manufacturing processes.
  4. Understand the complex relationship between equipment automation parameters and the underlying materials chemistry (thin film stack design, formulation, mixing, coating, and curing processes).
  5. Work with cross-functional operations teams (PD, MD, ID) and contract manufacturers to evaluate implementation risk, create technical requirements/RFP packages, assess the capabilities of automation integrators, and provide DFM feedback.

Skills

Required

  • BS/MS in Engineering (Automation, Mechatronics, Robotics, Computer Science, or equivalent cross-disciplinary degree)
  • 5+ years of professional experience working on automation, robotics, and data-driven applications in a high-volume manufacturing environment
  • Hands-on proficiency with either six-axis industrial robots (e.g., ABB, KUKA, Fanuc) and their programming languages, OR major brand PLCs (Beckhoff, Siemens, Allen-Bradley, etc.) and IPCs
  • Proven experience in massive data analysis, coding (e.g., Python, C++, Matlab), and deploying machine learning or machine vision solutions on the factory floor
  • Familiarity with a variety of surface treatment and manufacturing processes, specifically PVD, CVD, screen printing, digital printing, pad printing, or curing processes
  • Verbal and written English proficiency

Nice to have

  • Advanced statistical analysis skills and design/process optimization using DOE, Cpk, correlation, and GR&R (familiarity with JMP, Minitab, or Matlab)
  • Cross-disciplinary knowledge in Materials Science, Physics, or Chemistry
  • Proficiency with CAD to review and design mechanical components/fixtures and create proper engineering part drawings using GD&T practices
  • Experience in the selection, set-up, and validation of advanced measurement and characterization technologies (SEM, TEM, EDX, optical simulation software like macleod, TFCALC)
  • Ability to program-manage across multiple projects, vendors, and resources globally
