This role is for a Tax Principal to serve as a business advisor and technical resource for the tax function at Anthropic, an AI company. The role involves advising on tax implications of strategic initiatives, new products, and market expansion, as well as assisting with audit defense and technical research. Key responsibilities include business advisory, transaction support, technical research and documentation, and tax compliance and risk assessment. The role requires a JD or LLM in Taxation and exceptional tax technical research and writing skills, with experience in US federal income tax research and preparing technical tax memoranda. Preferred qualifications include Big 4 or large law firm experience, familiarity with tax technical software, knowledge of international tax matters, and experience in the technology or AI/software industry.

What you'd actually do

  1. Serve as a strategic tax advisor to business, product, partnerships, and go-to-market teams on new initiatives, product launches, pricing and billing structures, and commercial arrangements
  2. Research and document significant technical tax issues, including equity compensation and operational tax questions
  3. Partner with tax team members to assist with driving tax audit defense and dispute resolution efforts, including preparing audit defense files, coordinating responses to tax authority inquiries, and managing relationships during examinations and appeals processes

  • JD or LLM in Taxation
  • Exceptional tax technical research and writing skills

  • Experience with tax technical software/databases (Bloomberg Tax, RIA Checkpoint, Westlaw)

  • Knowledge of international tax matters (Subpart F, GILTI, transfer pricing, treaty analysis)
  • Experience in technology or AI/software industry
  • Prior in-house experience at a high-growth technology company
  • Familiarity with public company tax operations and reporting requirements
