Technical Abuse Investigator

OpenAI OpenAI · AI Frontier · San Francisco, CA · Intelligence & Investigations

This role focuses on detecting, investigating, and disrupting the misuse of OpenAI's AI platform. The investigator will develop and scale investigative processes, build technical solutions like data pipelines and utilities, and collaborate with various teams to improve detection and enforcement strategies. The role requires technical fluency in navigating complex datasets and automating manual processes, with a focus on agentic AI misuse and other relevant domains.

What you'd actually do

  1. Detect, investigate and disrupt abuse and harm with policy, legal, global affairs, security, and engineering teams via complex datasets
  2. Develop and iterate on abuse signals and investigative methods, scaling one-off insights to reduce manual effort and expand coverage.
  3. Build and maintain lightweight technical solutions (e.g., SQL/ Python data pipelines, investigation templates, dashboards, or internal utilities) for investigators focused on specific harm domains.
  4. Develop a deep understanding of OpenAI’s products, data systems, and enforcement mechanisms, and collaborate with engineering and data teams to improve investigative tooling, data quality, and workflows.
  5. Communicate investigation findings effectively to internal stakeholders through written briefs, data-backed recommendations, and escalation summaries
