Technical Artist – Video Effect

Canva Canva · Enterprise · Beijing, Beijing, China · Information Technology

Technical Artist role focused on designing and developing visual effects for Canva's video editing tools, optimizing materials and shaders using custom rendering engines, and scripting dynamic visual behaviors. Requires experience with real-time rendering pipelines, modern game engines, and scripting languages, with exposure to AI/AIGC-driven workflows.

What you'd actually do

  1. You’ll design and develop visual effects for video editing, including scene effects, facial effects, and post-processing pipelines
  2. You’ll build and optimize materials and shaders using Canva’s rendering engine and internal tooling
  3. You’ll collaborate closely with engineers and designers to deliver visually compelling and performant features
  4. You’ll leverage DCC tools to prototype and translate creative ideas into production-ready effects
  5. You’ll write and maintain scripts (Lua, JavaScript) to enable dynamic and interactive visual behaviors

Skills

Required

  • strong experience working with real-time rendering pipelines
  • ability to build materials, shaders, and visual effects that balance visual quality and performance
  • familiarity with modern rendering or game engines (e.g., Unreal Engine 5)
  • foundational understanding of Blueprints and C++
  • comfortable using scripting languages such as Lua or JavaScript to drive dynamic and interactive visual behaviours
  • experience from high-quality visual environments (e.g., 3A games, digital humans, or interactive media)
  • worked on systems such as face customization or character creation, with an understanding of scalable visual systems
  • confident using DCC tools to prototype and translate creative concepts into production-ready assets
  • collaborate effectively with engineers, designers, and product teams

Nice to have

  • exposure to Procedural Content Generation (PCG)
  • experience integrating with AI/AIGC-driven workflows
  • knowledge of character pipelines, including motion capture, animation optimization, or character physics/dynamics

What the JD emphasized

  • exposure to Procedural Content Generation (PCG), and ideally experience integrating with AI/AIGC-driven workflows
