Staff Software Engineer on the AI Safety team within Information Security, responsible for designing and building AI evaluation infrastructure, safety tooling, and automation to detect harmful, biased, or non-compliant AI behavior. The role involves translating safety and governance requirements into production-grade systems, contributing to AI safety standards, and collaborating with AI/ML engineers and product teams.

What you'd actually do

  1. Design and build AI evaluation infrastructure — develop pipelines and tooling that assess AI application for safety-relevant properties including output reliability, harmful content generation, fairness characteristics, and behavioral consistency.
  2. Develop AI safety tooling and automation — create automated evaluation workflow enabling safety checks for AI development
  3. Contribute to AI safety standards and policy — translate safety requirements from frameworks including NIST AI RMF and OWASP
  4. Write clear technical documentation — produce implementation guides that enable engineering teams to build safety-aware AI systems consistently.
  5. Collaborate across teams — work with AI/ML engineers, product teams, Legal, Compliance to ensure safety requirements are understood and implemented effectively.

Skills

Required

  • Working familiarity with NIST AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF) and OWASP LLM Top 10.
  • Understanding of secure software development principles and ability to integrate security and safety requirements into system design from the outset.
  • Hands-on experience building production observability systems. Familiarity with logging, metrics, alerting, and anomaly detection patterns applicable to AI/ML system outputs.
  • Operational experience with Azure and/or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Understanding of AI failure modes relevant to responsible deployment
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, engineering, information systems, cybersecurity, or related area and 4 years’ experience in software engineering or related area at a technology, retail, or data-driven company.
  • OR 6 years’ experience in software engineering or related area at a technology, retail, or data-driven company.

Nice to have

  • Certification in Security+, GISF, CISSP, CCSP, or GSEC
  • Master’s degree in computer science, information technology, engineering, information systems, cybersecurity or related area and 2 years’ experience leading information security or cybersecurity projects
  • Background in creating inclusive digital experiences
