User Experience Engineer III

Expedia Expedia · Hospitality · IL

Expedia is seeking a User Experience Engineer III to join their Technology Team, focusing on the Hotels.com homepage. This role involves designing and implementing high-quality user interfaces, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and building shared UX frameworks. The engineer will apply front-end engineering practices and demonstrate familiarity with AI-driven systems, integrating AI/ML concepts to improve user experience and personalization.

What you'd actually do

  1. Design and implement high-quality user interfaces and interaction patterns that align with product requirements, design systems, accessibility standards, and performance goals across multiple surfaces and devices.
  2. Translate UX and visual design specifications into robust, reusable front-end components and patterns, including system design (LLD), API integration patterns, and data modeling needed to support UI behavior and state management.
  3. Collaborate closely with designers, product managers, and engineers to refine requirements, validate technical feasibility, identify tradeoffs, and deliver incremental, testable UX improvements backed by data and experimentation.
  4. Build, extend, and maintain shared UX frameworks, design systems, and tooling that enable consistency, efficiency, and fungibility across multiple domains and product areas.
  5. Apply strong front-end engineering practices, including automated testing, performance optimization, accessibility compliance, observability, and resilient error handling for UX flows at scale.

Skills

Required

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years of professional experience (Master's) or 5+ years of professional experience (Bachelor's) in front-end or UX engineering building production web applications, including ownership of at least one significant service, experience, or feature area from implementation through release and iteration.
  • Proficiency with modern web technologies and frameworks used to implement UX designs, including component-based architectures, API consumption patterns, and data modeling for client-side state and rendering.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate UX and visual design requirements into accessible, performant, and maintainable interfaces, using system design (LLD), API contracts, and front-end architecture patterns.
  • Familiarity with AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows and applying AI/ML concepts to real world products, with the ability to safely integrate and operate AI/ML‑enabled UI features in collaboration with other engineering teams.

Nice to have

  • Experience owning end-to-end UX implementation for complex user journeys or multi-surface experiences, including architecture decisions, tradeoff analysis, and collaboration across multiple services or domains.
  • Depth in building and scaling design systems or shared component libraries, including extensible API design for components, robust data modeling for UI state, and governance for adoption across teams.
  • Proven track record of using quantitative and qualitative data (experimentation, analytics, user research) to inform UX engineering decisions and iteratively improve experience quality and business outcomes.
  • Strong focus on operational excellence for UX surfaces, including performance profiling, accessibility audits, observability for client behavior, and resilient error and degradation handling in production environments.
  • Applied experience integrating AI/ML-powered capabilities into user interfaces (such as recommendations, personalization, or intelligent UI behaviors), including safely operating these solutions, monitoring their impact on users, and collaborating with data/ML teams on model-driven UX.

What the JD emphasized

  • Demonstrate familiarity with AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows and applying AI/ML concepts to real-world products, and safely integrate and operate AI/ML‑enabled solutions that improve user experience, personalization, and content relevance.
