Value Chain Designer

Caterpillar Caterpillar · Industrial · Decatur, IL

This role focuses on optimizing the entire value chain for Caterpillar's mining equipment, from sourcing to delivery. It involves acting as an engineer within purchasing and supply chain, resolving material shortages, defining system constraints, and developing data-driven solutions. The role requires building and refining value-stream models to improve cost, delivery, and network performance, partnering with suppliers and internal teams. Key responsibilities include leading cross-functional teams, managing material continuity, developing global models, and applying structured problem-solving.

What you'd actually do

  1. Lead and coordinate cross‑functional teams (Engineering, Manufacturing, Procurement, Supply Chain, Logistics, and Suppliers) to optimize end‑to‑end value chain performance from the supply base through final delivery.
  2. Operate as an “engineer within the value chain,” blending technical, purchasing, and supply chain expertise to solve complex system challenges.
  3. Serve as the prime contact for material continuity, proactively resolving part shortages and ensuring production remains uninterrupted.
  4. Define boundary conditions, identify system constraints, and develop solutions that improve flow, capacity, and overall network performance.
  5. Drive critical value chain activities including inbound material planning, product sourcing, supplier and internal capacity planning, and footprint/network analysis.
