Director of Engineering for Smartsheet's Views pillar, leading teams responsible for core user-facing experiences like Timeline View and Board View. The role involves driving engineering vision, managing managers and engineers, setting quality standards, defining metrics, and leading cross-team technical efforts. A key responsibility is driving AI adoption across the pillar, championing AI-first design and operational practices, and holding leaders accountable for AI productivity.

What you'd actually do

  1. Own the engineering vision, charter, and goals for the Views pillar, partnering with your product counterpart to co-drive roadmap and quarterly priorities for Timeline View, Board View, and Shared Experiences.
  2. Lead multiple engineering teams through a layer of Engineering Managers and Principal Engineers, holding them accountable for delivery, technical quality, and team health while coaching them to grow as leaders.
  3. Drive the architecture of highly scalable, high-traffic, high-availability front-end experiences at the center of Smartsheet's intelligent work management platform.
  4. Set and maintain a high quality bar across the pillar, including code quality, automated test coverage, performance, security, and operational excellence, and build the mechanisms to sustain it.
  5. Drive AI adoption across the pillar, holding leaders accountable for AI productivity and championing AI-first design decisions and operational practices.

Skills

Required

  • 11+ years of software engineering and system architecture experience
  • 5+ years in engineering leadership, including 3+ years managing organizations of 20+ people with direct experience leading managers
  • building and scaling high-traffic, high-availability enterprise SaaS products at scale
  • modern front-end development and state management; hands-on experience with React, Redux, Webpack, or comparable libraries is required
  • microservice or SOA-based web application development and experience designing distributed systems
  • AWS infrastructure tooling (Terraform, EC2, ALB, Route 53, etc.) and NoSQL/relational database architectures
  • building secure, performant applications and embedding security principles
  • leading cross-functional technical programs with significant ambiguity and cross-team dependencies
  • Clear communication across audiences
  • build trust across product, design, and platform
  • coaching through ambiguity rather than defaulting to top-down direction
  • BS or MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
