Engineering Manager for Booking.com's Marketplace teams, responsible for leading a high-performing team that maintains and evolves mission-critical systems. The role focuses on creating an environment for engineers to design, build, and operate reliable, scalable platform components, ensuring technical decision-making, software delivery, operational excellence, and sustainable execution. Two potential teams are Conversational Platform (handling text, voice, video conversations for travelers, processing millions of messages daily, routing to human or AI actors) and Order Platform (source of truth for reservation data, orchestrating creation and changes). Responsibilities include people leadership, technology/craft/delivery guidance, architecture, and product strategy, with a focus on building new product capabilities and driving innovation.

Skills

Required

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in software development, building and scaling high-traffic, distributed systems
  • 2+ years of experience managing teams and performance
  • Proven experience modernizing legacy systems and leading major replatforming or migration efforts
  • Demonstrated ownership of critical production systems, including technical debt reduction and documentation
  • Prior experience running large-scale experiments (A/B testing) that drive measurable business impact

Nice to have

  • E-commerce, marketplace, messaging or other suitable platform experience strongly preferred
  • Expertise in Java and JVM-based microservices is preferred; experience with Golang, Scala, or Python is a plus
  • Experience in large scale data processing and workflow management is a plus
