Senior Mechanical Engineer I

Axon Axon · Enterprise · Kassel · 2024 Dedrone R&D

Senior Mechanical Engineer responsible for the full product lifecycle of mechanical systems and assemblies for fixed, portable, and mobile cUAS systems. This includes design, prototyping, testing, qualification, and production, with a focus on thermal performance, weight, stiffness, and environmental robustness. The role involves structural and thermal simulation, hands-on prototyping, problem-solving, mechanical-electrical integration, DFM/DFA, and supporting qualification activities. Experience in harsh or regulated environments and mentoring are also key.

What you'd actually do

  1. Own mechanical system and subsystem development across the full product lifecycle.
  2. Design durable mechanical solutions for fixed, portable, and mobile cUAS systems.
  3. Develop housings, structures, and mounting concepts with focus on thermal performance, weight, stiffness, and environmental robustness.
  4. Apply structural and thermal simulation (e.g. FEA, thermal analysis) to guide design decisions and validate concepts.
  5. Take a strong hands-on role in prototyping, testing, and iterative design improvements.

Skills

Required

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Several years of experience in mechanical design and system integration for complex hardware products.
  • Strong background in mechanical design for harsh or regulated environments.
  • Experience with structural and thermal simulation tools (e.g. SolidWorks Simulation, Ansys, or comparable).
  • Proficiency with CAD tools (e.g. SolidWorks or equivalent) and production-ready technical drawings.
  • Strong hands-on skills and confidence working with workshop tools and prototypes.
  • Practical understanding of manufacturing processes and design for production.
  • Proven problem-solving mindset, comfortable debugging real hardware issues.

Nice to have

  • Experience supporting knowledge sharing, reviews, or mentoring within an engineering team.
  • Clear communicator who enjoys ownership, collaboration, and technical depth.
