Senior Platform Engineer, Cloud Networking & Mesh

Axon Axon · Enterprise · Office, WA · 2013 Axon Foundation Services

This role focuses on cloud-native platform engineering, specifically on networking and mesh infrastructure for Axon's cloud systems. Responsibilities include managing Kubernetes networking, service mesh (Istio/Envoy), ingress, TLS automation, DNS, and edge routing, with a strong emphasis on automation, reliability, and adherence to regulatory standards like FedRAMP.

What you'd actually do

  1. Work on a mixed infrastructure and software team that owns critical platform networking for Axon's cloud systems: mesh and ingress, TLS and certificate automation, DNS and edge routing, and the automation that keeps those paths safe and observable.
  2. Advance Axon's use of Istio-style service mesh patterns that underpin how we scale—building features, hardening what runs in production, and improving how we roll out change.
  3. Act as a builder and operator: ship infrastructure-as-code and software-backed controls, steward components that must meet strict regulatory expectations (including FedRAMP where applicable), and address vulnerabilities with timely, disciplined change.
  4. Advise software engineers through design reviews, ad hoc questions, and pair programming when connectivity, ingress, mesh, or TLS behavior is on the critical path.
  5. Automate operations so the platform stays highly available (targeting four-nines-class reliability for these components). Example: TLS certificate management and automation at scale—where small mistakes can become customer-visible outages if left manual.

Skills

Required

  • Six or more years working on globally diverse, 24/7, high-volume production systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills debugging cloud-native distributed systems (HTTP/TLS, DNS, load balancing, Kubernetes networking).
  • Familiarity with a GitOps-style approach to software and infrastructure delivery.
  • Empathy for software engineers with widely varying depth in networking—meeting people where they are, without talking past them.

Nice to have

  • At least one strong track record from the following (we do not expect every candidate to match every item)
