About the role
Betterment’s mission is to empower people to do what’s best for their money so that they can live better. We’re looking for a Senior Product Designer for our rapidly-growing Betterment at Work platform, which provides modern financial benefits for today’s diverse workforce, empowering small-to-medium-sized businesses to attract and retain happy employees. You’ll lead projects that focus on the experiences of retirement advisors, as well as employees saving and planning for retirement on our award-winning web and mobile apps.

This role is based out of our NYC office. Below we've reflected the base salary range we would offer for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment’s total compensation package for employees.
- New York City: $135,000-$170,000

A day in the life
- Serve as design lead, building end-to-end experiences across the employee and advisor platforms and owning all aspects of design for your projects from inception through launch
- Contribute to product strategy by identifying new opportunities, generating innovative solutions, crafting intuitive and efficient designs, and improving existing features
- Define the design of AI-powered features within the Betterment at Work platform, shaping how they make retirement planning more intuitive and personalized for employees and advisors alike
- Partner with product management, engineering, and many others, working closely in cross-disciplinary teams across business-to-business and consumer-facing product areas
- Make informed, data-backed design decisions by leveraging research, sales data, customer insights, usability principles, and analytics
- Leverage AI tools across your design workflow, using them to sharpen problem framing, accelerate exploration, and prototype ideas faster—bringing judgment to know when and how to apply them effectively, and sharing learnings with the broader team
- Invest in your craft as part of a talented, supportive design team that values open feedback and works toward a unified customer experience across all touchpoints
What we’re looking for
- 4+ years of relevant experience as a Product Designer (previous titles may have been different)
- Portfolio of extraordinary product design work across web and mobile, with proven customer and business impact
- Experience leveraging research, usability testing, and analytics to determine user problems, and inform decisions
- Exceptional communication and collaboration skills; ability to align diverse stakeholders
- Strong organizational abilities, adept at managing multiple projects and timelines
- Strategic approach to design that clearly connects to business and user outcomes
- Curiosity about and experience with AI tools in your design process, and a desire to help the team develop shared practices as the space evolves
- Experience working within established accessible design systems and evolving when appropriate

What happens next

In the interview process, we’ll look to learn more about your skills, experiences, capabilities, and motivators. Many of our questions will be aimed at understanding how you might operate here at Betterment. Depending on the role, we may ask you to complete a case study exercise or technical assessments, as we want to collect a robust set of data points to better inform our decisions.
On average, it takes us around 3-5 weeks to make a hiring decision, depending on your availability and sense of urgency. As a best practice, we aim to interview at least 2-3 final round candidates before making a hiring decision. Please note that, as we usually receive an overwhelming number of applications for open positions, we’re unable to offer individual feedback during the interview process.
